　本資料は、秋田市の地方（じかた）遺跡から出土した、縄文時代（じょうもんじだい）晩期の土面です。1986年の発掘調査において、遺跡の捨て場から発見されました。
　人面を模した縄文時代の土面は、精霊や祖霊を表したと考えられています。顔の表現は、遮光器土偶（しゃこうきどぐう）に通じる特徴をもっています。目と口は横一文字に閉じられており、まるで瞑想しているかのような静かな表情を見せています。頭部には細い粘土紐（ねんどひも）を用いた波状の文様が、額や顎には沈線（ちんせん）による幾何学的な文様が施されています。眉や鼻の造形は立体的で、当時の造形力を今に伝える貴重な資料です。
　この土面の大きさは手のひらサイズで、人の顔全体を覆うには小ぶりです。紐を通すための穴が存在せず、裏面も平坦に作られているため、実際に顔に装着することは不可能であったと推測されます。そのため、この土面は、手に持ったり、あるいは額に押し当てたりして祈りを捧げるための特別な祭祀具（さいしぐ）として使われていたと考えられています。

This clay mask dates back to the Final Jomon period and was excavated from the Jikata Site in Akita City. It was discovered in a midden (disposal area) during an excavation in 1986.

Jomon-era clay face masks depicting human faces are believed to have represented spirits or ancestral spirits. The facial features share characteristics with Shakoki-dogu (goggle-eyed clay figurines). With its eyes and mouth closed in straight lines, the mask bears a serene expression, as if in deep meditation. The head is adorned with wavy patterns made from thin clay cords, while the forehead and chin feature geometric designs created with incised lines. The three-dimensional modeling of the eyebrows and nose demonstrates the artistic skill of the era.

This mask is palm-sized and too small to cover a human face. Since it lacks holes for strings and has a flat back, it is presumed that it could not be worn. Therefore, it is believed to have been used as a special ritual object for offering prayers, likely held in the hands or pressed against the forehead.
